Safety and Quality Less than a generation ago, the risks of infection or surgical
complication were generally thought to be unavoidable during patients'
medical treatment or hospitalization. Highly educated and trained
doctors, nurses and hospital leaders did their best to combat infections
and avoid mistakes, but the complexity of the health care system and
existence of human error presented constant challenges. Michigan
hospitals were among the first to heed the call for greater patient
safety and quality. And today, there is a new reality: one of
clinical empowerment through large-scale collaboration. Doctors, nurses
and hospital leaders are voluntarily working to identify and share best
practices with their colleagues around the state, nation and world to
make sure patients are receiving the best care possible.
Since
2003, the MHA Keystone Center has supported and guided Michigan
hospitals in identifying best practices and pioneering patient safety
interventions that have reduced infections and medical errors. These
interventions are saving thousands of lives and reducing health care
costs by hundreds of millions of dollars, fundamentally changing the way
health care is being delivered for the better. Now, because of their
success, Michigan's projects are being adopted throughout the
country and beyond.
